The Opportunity

An established and growing structural steelwork contractor is seeking a Structural Engineer to join its engineering team in London. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to work on a diverse portfolio of structural steel projects across the commercial, industrial, infrastructure, data centre, residential, and mixed-use sectors.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, analysis, and delivery of structural steelwork solutions, working closely with clients, architects, consulting engineers, detailers, fabrication teams, and project managers. You will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from initial design development and value engineering through to fabrication support and site installation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce structural calculations and engineering designs for a wide range of structural steelwork projects.
  • Design steel frames, secondary steelwork, connections, platforms, staircases, and associated structures.
  • Review architectural, structural, and construction drawings to develop practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Carry out structural analysis using industry-standard engineering software.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant British Standards, Eurocodes, and project specifications.
  • Prepare design calculations, reports, technical submissions, and supporting documentation.
  • Liaise with clients, consulting engineers, architects, contractors, and internal teams throughout the design process.
  • Support detailing teams by reviewing fabrication and erection drawings for technical accuracy.
  • Provide technical support to fabrication and site teams during project delivery.
  • Attend project meetings, design reviews, and client presentations as required.
  • Assist in identifying value engineering opportunities that improve project efficiency while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Resolve technical queries and engineering challenges throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support project handovers and ensure engineering information is delivered accurately and on schedule.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience working within the structural steelwork industry.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel design, fabrication, and erection processes.
  • Experience producing structural calculations and engineering designs for steel structures.
  • Knowledge of British Standards, Eurocodes, and UK construction regulations.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively within project deadlines.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership.
  • Experience designing complex steelwork structures and connections.
  • Familiarity with Tekla Structures, IDEA StatiCa, TEDDS, MasterSeries, or similar engineering software.
  • Experience working directly with fabrication and erection teams.
  • Understanding of temporary works and construction sequencing.
  • Experience within a contractor-led engineering environment.
