Senior Estimator - Structural Steel

Location: Cavan, Ireland
Salary: €80,000-€100,000 per annum
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time
Sector: Structural Steel / Construction

The Company

The steel leaving this business doesn't stay in the workshop for long.

It becomes part of major construction projects across Ireland, the UK and Europe, with structural steelwork playing a critical role in some of the most demanding pharmaceutical and blue-chip developments in the industry.

This is an established structural steel specialist with the capability to take projects from initial enquiry through estimating, fabrication and erection.

As the business continues to grow, they are looking for an experienced Senior Estimator to join the team in Cavan.

The Role

This isn't simply a case of putting figures against a set of drawings.

You'll be responsible for understanding the project, challenging the scope, assessing the technical requirements and building an estimate that is both commercially competitive and capable of being delivered profitably.

You'll work across the full tender process, from the initial enquiry through to submission and, ultimately, handover to the delivery team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and project documentation
  • Preparing detailed and accurate estimates for structural steel projects
  • Calculating quantities and assessing material requirements
  • Pricing fabrication, labour, transport and steel erection
  • Identifying project requirements, exclusions and potential risks
  • Obtaining and assessing pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Liaising with clients, consultants, architects and other project stakeholders
  • Preparing tender submissions, cost reports and bid clarifications
  • Developing pricing strategies based on project requirements and market conditions
  • Monitoring current steel prices and wider market trends
  • Ensuring tenders are commercially competitive while protecting project margins
  • Managing multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously
  • Working closely with Contracts and Project Management teams following successful tenders
  • Ensuring a clear and accurate handover from estimating into project delivery
  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the estimating team

What They're Looking For

The key requirement is structural steel estimating experience.

You'll need a strong understanding of what actually goes into manufacturing and erecting structural steel - not simply experience estimating within the wider construction industry.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • At least 5 years' experience in structural steel estimating in Ireland
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication and erection
  • Experience estimating medium to large-scale projects
  • The ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Strong understanding of materials, quantities and fabrication requirements
  • Experience dealing with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills
  • Strong commercial awareness
  • The ability to assess tender risk and project scope
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills
  • The ability to manage multiple tenders and competing deadlines
  • Good knowledge of estimating software and Microsoft Office
  • The confidence to work independently while contributing to a wider commercial and project team
  • Experience supporting or mentoring more junior estimators

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to step into a senior position within an established structural steel business, working on significant projects rather than smaller-scale steelwork packages.

You'll have the opportunity to influence how projects are priced, work directly with key stakeholders and play an important role in the continued growth of the estimating function.

If you're an experienced structural steel estimator who understands the numbers, the steel and what it takes to get a project built, this could be a very strong next step.

Salary & Benefits

€80,000-€100,000 per annum, depending on experience.

The role also offers:

  • Company pension
  • Company healthcare scheme
  • Bike to Work Scheme
  • Company events
  • Permanent, full-time employment
  • Long-term progression within an established structural steel business

Location: Cavan, Ireland
