The Role:
We are seeking a Principal Lift Engineer to lead the maintenance and improvement of lifts across Islington's housing properties. This is a key role in developing and managing a rolling cyclical capital works programme, ensuring that all lifts remain in optimal working condition.
You will oversee pre-contract technical surveys, procurement, and contractor management, ensuring that all work complies with health and safety regulations and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop & Manage Lift Maintenance Programmes - Ensure all lifts are well-maintained and replaced when beyond economic repair.
Technical Expertise - Prepare design briefs, feasibility reports, and specifications for new lift installations and refurbishments.
Procurement & Contractor Management - Work with the procurement team to appoint contractors and oversee their work.
Stakeholder Communication - Liaise with council departments, residents, and external agencies to ensure excellent service delivery.
Regulatory Compliance - Ensure all work adheres to statutory regulations, health & safety laws, and council policies.
Project & Budget Management - Oversee budgets and ensure cost-effective delivery of projects.
Leadership - Supervise and support a Lift Inspector, ensuring high standards of work and professional development.
The Candidate:
Qualifications
- Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers or equivalent with 6+ years of post-qualification experience OR
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Building Services with 6+ years of experience in lift design & maintenance.
Skills & Experience
- Proven ability to design, maintain, and refurbish lifts in residential and public buildings.
- Strong knowledge of statutory regulations, codes of practice, and British Standards for lift engineering.
- Experience in project management, including budget control, cost monitoring, and programme delivery.
- Excellent ability to write technical reports and solve engineering design challenges.
- Ability to lead a team, recruit, train, and manage staff effectively.
- Experience in appointing and overseeing contractors and consultants.
- Enhanced DBS clearance required.
