Commercial Litigation Lawyer (Contract)
Location: London Borough of Islington
Contract Length: 3+ months
Pay: £30 per hour (paid via umbrella)
Workstyle: Desk-based worker - minimum one day per week on-site
The Role
A vacancy has arisen for a General Litigation Lawyer within the Commercial Litigation Team at Islington Council. This is a varied role with a heavy caseload, where the largest client is Home Ownership. Key matters include:
Leasehold service charge recovery in the First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber)
Equality Act claims
General debt recovery litigation
The postholder will provide specialist, proactive legal advice to officers and members, conduct litigation, and appear as advocate in tribunals and courts as required.
Key Requirements
Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEX in England & Wales (or equivalent jurisdiction)
Minimum 2 years' PQE in litigation, ideally with experience in commercial or housing-related disputes
Strong knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and tribunal practice
Experience conducting cases, obtaining and evaluating evidence, and advocacy in court or tribunals
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to provide clear, pragmatic advice
About You
You will be confident in handling a varied caseload independently, including complex matters, while working collaboratively as part of the Council's Law & Governance Directorate. You will demonstrate initiative, resilience, and commitment to delivering high-quality public legal services.
