Job Description: Legal Assistant
Location: Newham
Reports to: Senior Legal Practice Officer
Pay: £18.00 per hour


Job Purpose:

To provide administrative support to the legal service, contributing to the delivery of high-quality legal advice to councils, members, officers, and external stakeholders. The role involves supporting legal teams across multiple disciplines and sites through a shared back-office service.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Administrative Support:

    • Provide a range of administrative tasks, including preparing court bundles, filing, and archiving.
    • Handle incoming and outgoing post, maintain legal systems, and schedule meetings.
    • Assist legal teams with fact-finding, research, and project work.
  2. Legal Operations:

    • Input data into the legal case management system and produce reports.
    • Assist lawyers with legal research and basic casework.
    • Administer the sealing of deeds, contracts, and documents.
  3. Customer Interaction:

    • Meet and greet clients and members of the public.
    • Respond to queries from internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Compliance & Support:

    • Support the team in maintaining Lexcel accreditation.
    • Ensure adherence to data protection, Freedom of Information, and safeguarding policies.
  5. General Duties:

    • Promote equality and diversity in service delivery.
    • Comply with health and safety regulations and maintain confidentiality.

Person Specification:

Essential Skills:

  • Proficiency in IT systems, including Microsoft Office and legal case management tools.
  • Ability to produce reports, maintain spreadsheets, and manage data.
  • Strong customer service skills and experience in administrative support within a professional setting.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Understanding of prioritising workloads and legal environments.
  • Knowledge of data protection and Freedom of Information principles.
