Location: Walsall (Hybrid - 2 days office-based per week)
Duration: 3 months (initially)
Hours: 37 per week
Rate: £25 per hour Umbrella
Overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Housing and Welfare Officer to join a busy local authority service on an interim basis. The successful candidate will provide a specialist housing and welfare advice service, supporting residents across a range of housing and benefit matters.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver a comprehensive housing and welfare service in accordance with relevant legislation and policy.
Prevent and resolve homelessness wherever possible by offering advice, support, and information to those in housing need.
Assess housing applications, determine homelessness duties, and support clients with access to the private rented sector.
Advise on welfare benefits, income maximisation, and housing rights, ensuring accurate and timely benefit claims.
Liaise effectively with internal departments and external partners, including landlords, solicitors, and support agencies.
Maintain accurate case records, correspondence, and system updates.
Represent clients at tribunals or court hearings as necessary.
Requirements
Proven experience within housing and welfare services, including homelessness prevention and benefits advice.
Strong understanding of housing legislation, including the Housing Act 1996 (as amended) and the Homelessness Code of Guidance.
Excellent communication and case management skills with a customer-focused approach.
Ability to manage a varied caseload effectively under pressure.
A commitment to equality, confidentiality, and high standards of service delivery.
5 GCSEs (A-C) including Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.
Desirable
Experience working with vulnerable individuals with complex needs.
Knowledge of local authority housing systems and processes.
