Education Welfare Officer

We are currently looking for a Education Welfare Officer for a role in Haringey. The Education Welfare Officer will assist Haringey education authority and Haringey schools in developing implementing and monitoring policies and practise to secure improved attendance at school and to support the agenda for raising the achievement of Haringey pupils.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To provide an Education Welfare Service support to schools in Haringey.

  • To assess and help address social emotional and educational problems which affect school attendance and manage a caseload ranging from non-attendance to vulnerable children with complex problems.

  • To assist Haringey schools in developing implementing and monitoring policies and procedures to improve school attendance within the framework of Haringey is equal opportunity policy.

  • To assist in the implementation of all council plans relating to young people.

  • To provide accessible support and strategic advice on attendance to Head Teachers being sensitive to the particular needs of children from diverse backgrounds and vulnerable students.

  • To maintain case records in line with Haringey council's case recording policy and to attend school events and meetings as required.

  • To promote and maintain the positive relationships and understandings between school staff parents/carers students and other agencies taking into account the families cultural back round and all ine ualit issues.

  • To carry out register audits, analysis of attendance data and to participate in authority led initiatives to address school absence.

  • To liaise with other education welfare officers in Haringey and other local education authorities, members of the school improvement inclusion service, Social Services, Youth Offending service and other agencies as appropriate to duties of the post.

  • In consultation with the Principal Education Welfare Officer to take appropriate action in the preparation of cases for court proceedings writing reports issued warning letters, attending court as necessary and processing Fixed Penalty Notices.

  • To liaise and work with the LEA Admissions Team and relevant schools reporting school admissions and transfers.

  • To attend child protection case conferences, organised planning meetings and write reports as necessary.

  • To work in partnership with appropriate staff in health and social services department and the LEA regarding the education of children in public care and children on the child protection register

  • To identify child protection issues and ensure these are dealt with according to Haringey safeguarding procedures

  • To have knowledge of recent legislation and council policies relating to the provision of education and to be able to advise schools and families about the same.

  • To ensure that the service provides a duty carried out or imprudence with Haringey policies and according to relevant legislation (e.g., Health and Safety Act Data Protection Act Human Rights Act) and protocols

  • To initiate referrals to other agencies when investigation indicates this to be necessary with the permission of parent's carers and the child concerned as appropriate.
